BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Anne Browning-Aiken is a cultural anthropologist and senior researcher at the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy with working ties tothe Center for Sustainability of semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas (SAHRA), Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS), and the Water Resources Research Center at The University of Arizona and with the UNESCO Program Hydrology for the Environment, Life, and Policy (HELP)

Her work focuses on natural resources policy and practice, watershed governance, community collaboration, and educational outreach on environmental and sustainability issues, with particular focus on natural resources collaborative governance and building social and learning capital in watershed groups. Her research examines the impacts of climate variability and change on water policy and management and the gap between policy planning and community water management practices.

Anne holds a Ph.D. degree in cultural anthropology with an emphasis on Latin America from The University of Arizona, a Master’s Degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a B.A. from Northwestern University. She also has additional training for environmental conflict resolution with the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution and ESL teaching from the University of Michigan.

She has five years of experience living and teaching in Greece, has lived and conducted research in Mexico, and worked with communities on water governance and development issues in Ecuador, Brazil, and the western United States. She speaks fluent Spanish and has a working knowledge of Greek.

Prior to beginning her Ph.D., Anne worked for archaeological groups such as Crow Canyon Archaeological Center on sites in Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico during the summers and taught British and American literature and composition at public schools and private colleges during the school year.
