BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Graciela Schneier-Madanes is deputy director of the Joint International Unit for Water, Environment and Public Policy (Unité Mixte Internationale Eau, environement et politique publique) an agreement between the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and The University of Arizona. She also is director of the CNRS Urban Water Research Network (res-EAU-ville) and director of the CNRS International Research Network on Governance and Access to Water in the Americas.

A specialist in urban geography and planning, Schneier-Madanes graduated as an architect from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and received a doctorate in geography at the Université Paris I Sorbonne.

Most of her research at CNRS has been within the Institute of Advanced Studies in Latin America (IHEAL/CREDAL) where she has worked and directed comparative research on urban and infrastructural networks (i.e., water and communication systems) and on formal and informal aspects of land tenure.

As a professor she directs several doctoral students and teaches at the Université Paris 3 Sorbonne-Nouvelle and at the School of Architecture Paris La Villette. She also has coordinated an exchange program (Erasmus) on architecture and planning for European students, and has taught extensively throughout Europe and in Latin America.
