ECOSTART II and the Soil Moisture Experiment 2004
Two networks of schools in southern Arizona and Sonora, Mexico are currently providing auxiliary baseline and regional control soil moisture data to scientists seeking to improve their understanding of the North American Monsoon. The overall effort is known as the North American Monsoon Experiment (NAME). An associated group of scientists are focused on studying linkages between soil moisture and the atmospheric system in what is called the Soil Moisture Experiment 2004 (SMEX04). The intention of SMEX04-NAME is to enhance the terrestrial hydrology component of NAME by facilitating the development of soil moisture data sets that are based on remote sensing from satellites and in aircraft, as well as manual collections of soil moisture on the ground. The data collection effort began 12 July 2004, and is ongoing through 12 August 2004.
