Ian Record
Manager, Leadership and Management Programs,
Native Nations Institute

Ian W. Record is manager of leadership and management programs for the Native Nations Institute at the University of Arizona, where he directs the development and maintenance of NNI's distance-learning and multimedia curriculum programs.

He recently produced NNI's nationally aired “Native Nation Building” television/radio series, a 10-segment roundtable interview program dedicated to exploring contemporary indigenous governance and development issues.

Ian earned M.A. (2000) and Ph.D. (2004) degrees in American Indian studies (AIS) from the University of Arizona, and previously earned B.A. degrees (1993) in history and mass communications from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

A senior lecturer with AIS, Ian developed and teaches the new undergraduate course “Native Nation Building: Governance and Economic Development." In the past, he has taught the introductory AIS course “Traditions 101: Many Nations of Native America” and has also guest-lectured for several other AIS courses, including “Native American Warfare,” “Native Americans in Film,” and “Native American Religion and Spirituality.” For the past four years, he has served as editor of the Yaqui Times, the official newspaper of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. In addition, from 1998 to 2003, he served as managing editor of RED INK, the University of Arizona 's Native American magazine.

His articles and other writings have appeared in several Native American periodicals, including Native Americas, Native Peoples, and RED INK . In 2000, Ian received an honorable mention in the “Indigenous Futures 2000” International Case Writing Competition, conducted by the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada.

Record joined the Udall Center staff in July 2001 and served as a graduate research associate until 2004.
