Adonis Trujillo attends Emerging Leaders for Sustainable Community Development
Adonis, of Taos Pueblo and a Native Nations Institute Graduate Research Assistant, was one of four Fulbright recipients representing the United States. The first-ever Emerging Leaders for Sustainable Community Development(ELSCD) program, held June 2 - 10, 2017, was hosted by the Emerging Leaders Dialogue, Fulbright Canada and Institute for the Study of International Development. ELSCD covered the following topics: Leadership Experiences, The Importance of Voice and Participation, Creating Opportunities, Social and Public Programs to Promote Leadership, Leadership and Identity Creation, & Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Perspective on the Environment.
The group of 40 emerging leaders, most with Indigenous backgrounds, consisted of individuals representing several sectors including educational, governmental and environmental. Members of the program engaged in dialogues across different Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations in the public, private and not for profit sectors. This cross-sector approach exposed participants to a range of issues from multiple perspectives, and provided a unique opportunity to look beyond the scope of one’s regular context in organizations and locales.
This experience has increased Adonis’s capacity through the heightening of competency on issues pertaining to inclusiveness, diversity, collaboration, sustainability, ethics and good governance. He plans to use this knowledge to work towards advancing the many communities he is involved with culturally, environmentally and economically.
