Thank you for helping us spread the word about our upcoming public PFAS symposium titled, “Tackling PFAS for a Sustainable Future: Advancing Science and Policy.”

The Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy, the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center and other partners will host a public event about the toxic “forever chemicals”, known as PFAS, found in municipal drinking water across the U.S. and in the blood of nearly every person on the planet. The event will be held on November 12, 2024 from 3pm-6pm at the Health Sciences and Innovation Building on campus. The public event follows a day-long interdisciplinary conversation to promote collaborative research on PFAS and human health (please note that both events require separate registration).

PFAS—also known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or "forever chemicals"—are a group of chemicals widely used in an array of consumer goods, from stain-resistant textiles and firefighting foam to medical devices and food packaging.

Largely unregulated for the duration of their existence, these chemicals are now known to cause a range of health impacts on living beings even in small amounts. PFAS have been found in municipal drinking water across the US and in the blood of nearly every person on the planet.

The Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy will host a public-facing symposium dedicated to explaining advances in the science and management of these widespread chemicals. The public symposium will follow a day-long interdisciplinary conversation to promote collaborative research on PFAS and human health hosted by the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center (please note that both events require separate registration).

Expert panelists and speakers will include:

  • Dianne Barton, Tribal PFAS Working Group and Chairwoman of the National Tribal Toxics Council
  • Adrienne Brown, Postdoctoral researcher at the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy
  • Mark L. Brusseau, U of A Prof. of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Science
  • Elliott Cheu, U of A Interim Senior VP of Research and Innovation
  • Cherie L. DeVore (Diné), U of A Asst. Prof. of Chemical and Environmental Engineering
  • Andrea K. Gerlak, Director of the UArizona Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy
  • Gina Gilson, Environmental Policy Program Research Scientist at the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy
  • Bo Guo, U of A Assoc. Prof. of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences

  • Matthew Narter, Senior Hydrologist, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality
  • Jennifer Schlezinger, Boston University School of Public Health, Prof. of Environmental Health
  • Gemma Smith, Assistant Professor in the UArizona School of Government and Public Policy

If you’re at all interested in the future of science and policy related to this increasingly prevalent contaminant, you won’t want to miss this event!

“Tackling PFAS for a Sustainable Future: Advancing Science and Policy” is organized by the U of A Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy with support from the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center; the University of Arizona Health Sciences; the U of A Office of Research, Innovation & Impact; the Water Resources Research Center; the Arizona Institute for Resilience; the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health; and the France-Arizona Institute for Global Grand Challenges.
