In this talk, Dr. Valerdi will describe some basic principles of decision making and utilize them to examine policies that had negative unintended consequences. Most policies are designed with good intentions, however, in some instances they result in bad outcomes. Dr. Valerdi will provide examples from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Department of Defense, and Major League Baseball to illustrate how policies that were designed with good intentions resulted in bad outcomes. He will also describe heuristics that can be utilized to test whether policies might have bad outcomes in the future.
