The advancements in educational technologies have impacted the Department of Education's interpretation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). During this presentation, Dr. Rodrigo will outline the changes as made through the guidance documents issued by the Student Privacy Policy Office (SPPO). Using Solove's (2021) "Myth of the Privacy Paradox" as a framework, she will discuss how mid-level administrators in higher education, especially department heads/chairs and their equivalents, should productively advocate for more robust regulation at institutional and government levels to hold ed tech companies more accountable for both faculty and student privacy.
