Global Challenges: Science Diplomacy and Policy with Focus on the Americas
Udall Center is cosponsoring conference, “Global Challenges: Science Diplomacy and Policy with Focus on the Americas.” Researchers and diplomats from around the world will converge on the University of Arizona to discuss science diplomacy and share concerns about the new administration.
The conference will take place in Tucson between February 22 and 25, 2017. It features a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist, a former U.N. ambassador, former science advisers to the U.S. secretary of state, and key members of leading scientific organizations and universities. The event will open with a roundtable discussion, free to the public, on the evening of Wednesday, February 22nd. Participants will talk about the impact of emerging U.S. policies on science and its role in diplomacy. See “U.S. Policies Trouble Scientists Bound for Global Summit at the UA.”
In conjunction with the event, the University is hosting a Science Diplomacy Seminar Series. As part of that series, Professor David Cash, Dean of the McCormack School of Policy and Global Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston, will give a lecture, “Deconstructing the Science Policy Interface in a Post-Truth Era,” on Monday, February 13, 2017.
The main sponsor of the conference is the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics in the College of Engineering. Cosponsors at the University of Arizona include the Office of Global Initiatives, the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy, the College of Social and Behavioral Science, RDI (Research, Development and Innovation), the Institute of the Environment, the Lloyd’s Register Foundation-funded International Water Security Network, and the Agnese Nelms Haury Program in Environmental Justice.
